FAQS

Playground bark chips & playsand FAQs

What's the difference between play bark, wood chips and rubber chippings?

Play bark is the bark part of the tree — it knits together well and gives a natural look. Play wood chippings are screened and graded chips from the wood itself — chunkier and more resilient. Both perform equally well as play area surfacing. Rubber chippings cost more upfront but last 10+ years without decomposing, making them more cost-effective long term. All three meet safety standards at the correct depth.

For residential use, we recommend a minimum of 200mm depth. For commercial or public play areas covered by BS EN 1176, greater depths are required — typically 300mm or more depending on equipment fall height, plus an additional 100mm to allow for displacement in use (BS EN 1177). Check individual product specifications for critical fall height data, or use our quantity calculator to work out how much you need.

Yes. Our standard playsand is clean, washed and suitable for children's outdoor sandpits and play areas. It's a natural, non-toxic material used in schools, nurseries and home gardens across the UK.

You can, but consider the condition of the existing material first. Old bark often becomes compressed and firm, especially in dry conditions. If you lay new bark on top at minimal depth, it will wear out quickly due to abrasion. If the old material is very hard and compact, we recommend removing it and replacing with fresh bark — this prevents the new surface sitting too high and spilling over the edges.

We recommend laying a heavy-duty geotextile membrane underneath play bark. It blocks weed growth while allowing water to drain through, extending the life of your bark surface and reducing maintenance. Secure it with membrane pegs before laying the bark.
